What would a Canadian blog be without a post about Halloween?!? Somebody has to experience Halloween in North America to know what dimension it has here. It is seriously incredible.
Die Woche vor Halloween/ The week before Halloween:
Genau, richtig gelesen, der Wahnsinn beginnt schon in der Woche vor Halloween. Shops, Restaurants und sogar Banken sind gruselig geschmückt und es gibt Halloween-Specials an jeder Ecke. Halloween war dieses Jahr an einem Freitag, es ist also ab Montag völlig normal, dass man kostümiert zur Arbeit kommen kann. Komische Blicke in der Metro und im Bus gibt es nicht, bei originellen Kostümen wird man sogar des Öfteren gelobt.
Yes, right Halloween starts here the week before the actual day. Shops, restaurants and even banks are decorated with spooky pumpkins, spiders and zombies. There are Halloween specials wherever you go. This year Halloween was on a Friday, so you could see a lot of people with costumes from Monday on. Nobody gives you a weird look, it's absolutely normal that you ride in the bus next to a zombie or another monster. The more creative, the more compliments somebody gets.
Der Tag aller Tage/ The day itself:
Halloween ist der Lieblingsfeiertag der Kanadier und der Amerikaner. Gearbeitet wird trotzdem, aber ernst bei der Sache sein?? Auf keinen Fall, schliesslich läuft sogar der Chef im Kostüm herum. Im Skytrain fuhr ich neben einem Ninja Turtle und einem Zombie, alles ganz normal. :)
Halloween is the favorite national "holiday" of Canada and the US. Even though everybody is working, you can't take anybody serious. How could you when even your boss is dressed up?? :) In the skytrain I was standing between Ninja Turtles, Zombies and other creatures. Absolutely normal!
Der Abend von Halloween/ The Halloween evening:
Kirsten und ich beschlossen, die berühmte und leicht mysteriöse Halloween Pary im Skytrain abzuchecken. Man muss sich das folgendermassen vorstellen: Um 8pm fährt ein Skytrain ein, die vollständig kostümierte Gesellschaft steigt ein, mitten drin eine DJane. Der Skytrain fährt die gewohnte Strecke von Downtown in ein Aussenbezirk und zurück. Währenddessen geht im Train die Party ab. Ich habe wirklich noch nie so etwas verrücktes gesehen!! Und das Beeindruckenste: Die Kanadier verhalten sich völlig anständig. Es wird getanzt und gefeiert, aber niemand trinkt oder raucht, niemand randaliert und die Party geht friedlich vonstatten. Liebe Fussball-Fans, nehmt euch doch mal ein Bespiel daran!!
Nach dieser Party ging es auf die Hauptstrasse von Vancouver, die Granville Street. Die Strasse war voll mit kostümierten Menschen, die alle nur die schönen Kostüme der anderen bestaunen wollten. Kirsten und ich fühlten uns wie Filmstars, da wir unglaublich oft nach Fotos gefragt wurden.
Unser letzter Stop des Abends führte uns in einen Club in der Altstadt von Vancouver. Da tanzten wird dann mit Zombies, Scooby Doo und anderen Kreaturen durch die Nacht.
Kirsten and I decided to check out the mysterious Skytrain party. You have to think about this like that: A big crowd of costumed people is waiting at the main station for the Skytrain. At 8pm everybody is entering one particular Skytrain which is hosting a DJane. The Skytrain is taking his normal route from Downtown to Richmond. Meanwhile the party is going on inside. I've never seen something as crazy as this. Everybody is just dancing, the music is super loud and everybody is in an amazing mood. What impressed me the most: Nobody caused any damage. There was almost no alcohol and cigarettes, nobodoy damaged anything and everybody was just behaving. Incredible! In Europe, you have to have one soccer game and everybody is damaging half of the city!!
After that, we went to the main street of Vancouver, Granville Street, to check out all the creative costumes and to take some pictures with other zombies. :) We felt like movie stars, because so many people wanted to take pictures with us:)
Our last stop was a night club in Gastown where we danced for a couple of hours with Scooby Doo, Zombies and other monsters.
Heute verbrachte ich den Tag zuhause, völlig erschöpft von Halloween, aber überglücklich diese Jahr richtig gefeiert zu haben. Die sonst so braven Kanadier haben mir gezeigt, was es heisst zu feiern! :)
Today, Halloween is unfortunately over, but it was a great celebration this year and I'm really happy that I was part of that big celebration. The always well-behaving Canadians showed me how to celebrate a real Halloween! Thank you for that!
