Mal ehrlich, was gibt es Schöneres als mit einem heissen Kaffee und einem Stück Kuchen in einem Café zu sitzen und mit Freunden zu plaudern? Cafés sind die Orte, wo grosse Liebesgeschichten beginnen, Geschäfte abgeschlossen werden und Freunde und Familien sich treffen.
Ein Café ist ein Ort des sozialen Austausches, eine Erweiterung des Wohnzimmers, ein Ersatz für die eigenen vier Wände. Anstatt mit seinem Laptop am eigenen Küchentisch zu sitzen, sollte man seinen Arbeitsplatz auf jeden Fall in ein Café verschieben.
Vancouver ist voll mit kleinen Cafés. Immer wieder wurde ich überrascht, wenn ich in meiner eigenen Nachbarschaft wieder ein neues Café entdecktee, dass ich unbedingt besuchen wollte. Meine Liste ist unendlich und es ist kein Ende in Sicht. Ein weitere Grund irgendwann mal wieder nach Vancouver zu gehen.
Was ich auf keinen Fall empfehlen kann, ist Starbucks, Tim Hortons, JJBeans and Waves. Die Stadt ist überflutet von diesen Marken und wenn es mal schnell gehen muss, dann sind sie definitiv eine Lösung. Aber mal ehrlich: Ihr reist doch nicht um die halbe Welt, um dann einen Frappuccino zu trinken, der genau gleich schmeckt, ob in Hongkong, Wien oder Miami.
Aus diesem Grund möchte ich euch meine fünf Lieblingscafés der Stadt vorstellen. Jedes auf seine Art speziell mit sehr viel Charme.
1. Kafka

Das Café Kafka trägt einen grossen Namen, der viel Erwartungen mit sich bringt. Aber das Kafka trägt seinen Namen in Ehren.
Die Atmosphäre ist sehr angenehm, obwohl das Café sehr belebt ist und hier ein Kommen und Gehen herrscht. Trotzdem ist es der ideale Ort, um zu lernen, ein Kaffee-Date zu geniessen, zu entspannen oder einfach das geschäftige Treiben der Main Street zu beobachten. Meistens lernte ich im Kafka, da es gleich neben meinem Haus war, aber manchmal genoss ich auch einfach einen Kaffee und beobachtete die vielen verschiedenen Menschen, die hier zusammenkommen.
Bei meinem letzten Besuch habe ich mich allerdings mal für einen Tee entschieden und siehe da, es gab sogar ein "Re'fill" für den Tee. Das nenne ich mal einen Service!
Das Kafka ist Teil einer lokalen Community und aus diesem Grund unterstützt das Café auch lokale Künstler. Die Wände des Cafes sind mit Kunstwerken geschmückt, mal Bilder, mal Fotografien, manchmal sogar 3D Werke. Lokale Künstler haben die Möglichkeit, das Kafka zu kontaktieren, um eine kleine Ausstellung machen zu können.
Wer sich also in der Gegend Mainstreet und Broadway herumtreibt, muss unbedingt mal beim Kafka vorbeischauen, es lohnt sich.
2. Breka Bakery

Breka Bakery ist ein Café, das 24/7 geöffnet ist. Aus diesem Grund ist es auch sehr beliebt bei Studenten. Studenten mit Laptops oder Lerngruppen gehören hier zum alltäglichen Bild, dies sollte aber alle anderen nicht davon abschrecken, dem Breka einen Besuch abzustatten - es lohnt sich.
Meiner Meinung nach hat Breka das beste Gebäck der Stadt. Sie erinnerten mich immer ein wenig an zu Hause und haben mich bis jetzt noch nie enttäuscht.
Als meine Eltern zu Besuch waren, wohnten sie ganz in der Nähe der Breka Bakery an der Bute Street. Mehr als einmal haben wir uns entschieden, dort Frühstück zu essen. Wir haben es nie berreut und uns regelrecht die Bäuche vollgeschlagen mit Kaffee, Smoothies, Croissants und Gebäck.
Die Breka Bakery an der Bute Street hat eine schöne Terasse und ich liebte es, dort gemeinsam mit meinen Freuden am Feierabend zu sitzen. Natürlich statte ich dem Breka auch regelmäßige Lernbesuche ab (man finde den Schlüssel zu meinem schulischen Erfolg - gute Cafés :)). Ausserdem habe ich im Breka Café schon öfter spannende Menschen getroffen. Kürzlich kam ich ins Gespräch mit einer jugen Schmuckdesignerin.
Wer also im West End oder an der Davie Street ist, darf die Breka Bakery nicht verpassen.
3. Finch's Tea and Coffee House
353 West Pender Street (Corner Pender/Homer, Downtown)
Finch's Tea and Coffee House bietet sich an, wenn man sich gerade im unteren Teil von Downtown befindet und gerne in einem schönen Café seinen Kaffee geniessen möchte. Das ist in Downtown nicht ganz einfach, da es neben Starbucks, Tim Hortons und Co. kaum noch andere Cafés gibt. Aber Finch's Tea and Coffee House kann ich euch wirklich ans Herz legen. Die Einrichtung kann man wohl als "Shabby Chic" bezeichnen, wobei ich das hier durchaus positive meine. Das Café ist klein und voll mit vielen kleinen Tischen, einige davon stehen etwas erhöht im "Schaufenster". Vorhänge und Blumen geben einem das Gefühl zu Hause im Wohnzimmer zu sitzen. Neben Tee und Kaffee kann man bei Finch's Tea and Coffee House auch belegte Brote, Suppen, Frühstück oder Kuchen geniessen. Ich habe kürzlich einen Salat dort gegessen und ich muss sagen, dass das einer der Besten Salate war, die ich in Vancouver je hatte.
Hier noch eine lustige Geschichte zum Café: Auf meinem Flug in die Heimat letzten Dezember habe ich den Film "If I stay" (grossartiger Film, oberschnulzig) geschaut. Ich traute meinen Augen nicht, als die Hauptdarstellerin plötzlich ihre Freundin bei Finch's trifft. Das musste ich auch gleich meinen Sitznachbarn mitteilen, die waren allerdings wenig interessiert an meiner "Story".
Nur ein Block von Finch's liegt der McLeod's Buchladen. Ein unglaublich alter Second-Hand Buchladen, der überquillt vor lauter Büchern. Wie wäre es, ein Buch bei McLeod's zu kaufen und danach einen Kaffee bei Finch's zu geniessen?
4. Coco et Olive

Coco et Olive habe ich mit Carla entdeckt, als sie mich hier in Vancouver besuchen kam. Das Cafe stach uns Beiden sofort ins Auge. Hipster meets Hippie, ein Treffen in der Brockenstube. So kann man die Einrichtung von Coco et Olive wohl am Treffendsten beschreiben. Natürlich haben wir dort zusammen gefrühstückt, Carla probierte das Mittagessen aus und ich nutzte das Café schon als Lernstube.
Die Einrichtung ist wirklich außergewöhnlich im Coco et Olive. Die Tische und Stühle sind alle bunt zusammengemixt, alles aus der Brockenstube, nehme ich mal an. Auf dem Fenstersims stehen Blumen, die Wände sind mit Kunstwerken behängt.
Bestellt man sich einen Tee, kriegt man eine grosse Teekanne und eine verschnörkelte Tasse. Auch die Teller und Schalen sind mit unterschiedlichen Mustern verziert. Das Geschirr erinnert mich stark an den Haushalt von Grosseltern, alles ein wenig alt, aber mit sehr viel Charme.
Wie viele Cafés an der Mainstreet bietet auch das Coco et Olive eher gesunde Snacks an wie Suppen, Sandwiches und Quiches. Vor allem die Sandwiches haben es mir schwer angetan, ein Träumchen.
Das Coco et Olive liegt an der gleichen Strasse wie das Kafka, allerdings etwa 15 Minuten weiter südlich.
5. Forty Parallel Ninth

Kannst du Kaffee auch kaum ohne etwas Süssem geniessen? Ich persönlich bin ja ein Fan vom deutschen Brauch "Kaffee und Kuchen". Das zelebriere ich auch immer und überall in vollem Masse! :) Forty Parallel Ninth ist bekannt für seine Donuts - Homer Simpson wäre hier ein Stammgast. Das Parallel ist einer der beliebtesten Cafés der Stadt und ein Grund dafür sind die Donuts. Es gibt sie in allen Variationen - Schokolade, Zimt, Apefel oder den Classic. Mein Lieblingsdonut ist definitiv der mit Zimt.
Doch wer hier vorbeischaut, muss ein wenig Geduld mitbringen, vor allem am Wochenende. Die Schlange vor der Kasse ist oft lang, einen Platz muss man sich erkämpfen. Sogar während der Woche muss man für seinen Kaffee oft anstehen, allerdings findet man dann ohne Problem einen Sitzplatz. Das Parallel hat ausserdem auch einen Patio an der Main Street.
Es scheint ziemlich offensichtlich, dass die drei der fünf Cafes, die ich vorgestellt habe, an der Main Street liegen. Grund dafür: Ich wohne neben der Main Street, ich liebe die Main Street und die Strasse ist sehr einheimisch, man sieht bedeutend weniger Touristen als in anderen Teilen der Stadt.
Das ist nur eine kleine Auswahl meiner liebsten Cafés in Vancouver. Natürlich gibt es noch viele mehr, deshalb habe ich mir überlegt noch einen zweiten Beitrag zu diesem Thema zu verfassen.
Nun interessiert es mich aber, welches eure Lieblingscafés sind? Wo treibt es euch hin, wenn ihr in Vancouver seid?
Natürlich wird bald auch ein ähnlicher Post zu den besten Cafés in Zürich folgen. Bis dahin müssen aber noch ein paar Liter Kaffee getrunken werden. :-)

Let's be honest - what's nicer than sitting in a coffee store, having a cup of coffee in front of you, enjoying a piece of cake and chatting with a friend? Coffee stores are the places where big love stories begin, business relationships are made, friends gather together and families enjoy a hot chocolate with their kids.
There is nothing more social than a coffee store, they are an extension of your livngroom, an escape from your own reality back home. They are a place where you meet a man or a woman for the first time, the place where you meet your girls to share the newest gossip, the place where you buy a hot chocolate for your kid or the place where you warm your hands on a hot cup of coffee on a cold winter day.
A big city is full with coffee stores. Vancouver is overflowed with Starbucks, JJ Beans, Waves and Tim Hortons. If you're in a hurry, thez are definitely a good choice. But let's be honest, you don't travel to another city to have a Frappuccino at Starbucks that tastes exactly the same as the one in your hometown.
For that reason, I created this small guide - five coffee stores you shouldn't miss when you're in town. Each of them is something special, a place where you feel welcomed.
1. Kafka
2525 Main Street
This coffee store carries a big name, a pressure that not every coffee shop can handle. But Kafka justifies the name.
The atmosphere in the coffee store itself is super relaxed even though it's a busy place. It's the perfect place to study, having a coffee date, to relax or to enjoy people watching (my favourite thing to do). Most of the time I came to Kafka to study because it was just next to my house, but sometimes I also just sit there, had a cup of coffee and enjoyed the busyness of Main Street.
The last time I went there I got a tea and I was surprised that you can get a refill for your tea, that's unique!
Kafka is part of a local community and for that reason they support local artists. The walls of the coffee shop are always decorated with art, discreetly but still an eye-catcher. Local artists can contact Kafka to get the chance for a small exhibition inside the shop.
If you're at Mainstreet and Broadway you should definitely check out this place, you're not going to regret it.
2. Breka Bakery

Breka Bakery is a 24/7 open and for that reason a really popular coffee store for students. But don't get afraid of the fact that there are a lot of students with laptops and study groups. Breka Bakery is worth a visit even if you're not a student.
From my point of view the Breka Bakery has the best pastries in town. The pastries reminded me a little bit of home and so far none of them disappointed me.
When my parents were in town, they lived really close to Breka Bakery on Bute Street. For that reason we decided more than once to have breakfast over there. We didn't regret it and my parents just loved the place. We enjoyed coffee, smoothies, croissants, scones and of course the famous pastries.
Breka Bakery at Bute Street has a nice outside patio under the trees and I loved it to sit there with friends to chat. But it's also one of the places I went to study (you see what's the success of my studies - good coffee stores :)). Breka also gives you the opportunity to meet interesting people. Just recently I was sitting at Breka when a jewellery artist next to me start talking with me. We had a really interesting discussion.
So, if you're wandering around in the West End or Davie Street of Vancouver, don't forget to visit Breka to taste one of there pastries!
3. Finch's Tea and Coffee House

This place is really convenient when you're in Lower Downtown and you're looking for a nice coffee shop. Downtown is full with Starbucks, Tim Hortons, JJBeans and Waves but it is a real challenge to find a nice coffee store. But I get one for you - Finch's Tea and Coffee House. The décor of this coffee store could be described as Shabby Chic - but I mean it in a really positive way. It's a small café with small tables, some of them are placed in the "shop window". Curtains and flowers give you the feeling of a living room. Besides Tea and Coffee you can have sandwiches, soups, breakfast, small dishes and sweets. Just recently I had a salad here and I have to admit that it was one of the best salads I had in Vancouver.
One fun fact: On my flight back home last December, I watched the movie "If I stay" (great, cheesy movie). I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that the main actress met her friend in Finch's Tea and Coffee House (I even told it my neighbours in the plane).
One block away from Finch's, there is an amazing bookstore called McLeod's Book. It's an old bookstore full with books from all over the world about every single topic you're looking for. And if I say full, I mean full :) What about grabbing a book at McLeod's bookstore and then having a coffee at Finch's?
4. Coco et Olive

I discovered Coco et Olive together with Carla, actually she discovered it when she came to visit me. The coffee shop grabbed our attention right away, it's this cute little shop with a painting at the outer wall and plants in the window. Hipster meets Hippie, a get together in the living room. That's how we felt when we entered Coco et Olive. We tried their breakfast, Carla had lunch there and I used the shop as my study room.
The furniture is really mixed, a lot of pieces don't match but it's gives the place a welcoming feeling. The walls are full with art, the window is decorated with plants and flowers.
If you order a tea, you get a teapot and a cute cup, both decorated with ornaments. The dishes are in the same style and everything reminded me a little bit of the dishes of grandparents. But everything is really charming.
Like most of the coffee stores on Main, Coco et Olive offers quiet healthy food such as soups, sandwiches and quiches. Especially the sandwiches make me come back to Coco et Olive quiet a lot.
Coco et Olive is at the same street as Kafka and Parallel but it's more south than the other two.
5. Forty Parallel Ninth

You are into sweets? Especially donuts? That's your place for you to go. If Homer Simpson would exists, he wouldn't go somewhere else. The Parallel Coffee Shop is famous for their donuts and you can see that on the long line-up in front of the cashier. If you're going to visit Parallel, bring some patience, you probably have to stay a little bit in line. Even during the week, it can happen that you have to stay in line. But let me tell you that it is worth it. Students, couples, families - everybody finds it's way to Parallel. You can't miss a donut here! My favourite donut is the cinnamon one.
The coffee shop is a comfortable place to stay, the wooden interior, the couches and the fireplace give it a rustic but warm atmosphere. If the sun is shining you can even sit outside which is not a common thing here in Vancouver, coffee stores with a small patio are hard to find.
As you can see, three of the five coffee stores I chose are on Main Street and I can't deny that I just love this street. Places like Parallel make it such a great and welcoming area and this part of the city is not always as crowded with tourists.
So, this is just a small selection of coffee stores that I visited frequently. Of course, there are way more coffee stores all over the city and I'm thinking to write a second post about coffee shops in Vancouver. I just feel like I didn't cover all of them.

Let's be honest - what's nicer than sitting in a coffee store, having a cup of coffee in front of you, enjoying a piece of cake and chatting with a friend? Coffee stores are the places where big love stories begin, business relationships are made, friends gather together and families enjoy a hot chocolate with their kids.
There is nothing more social than a coffee store, they are an extension of your livngroom, an escape from your own reality back home. They are a place where you meet a man or a woman for the first time, the place where you meet your girls to share the newest gossip, the place where you buy a hot chocolate for your kid or the place where you warm your hands on a hot cup of coffee on a cold winter day.
A big city is full with coffee stores. Vancouver is overflowed with Starbucks, JJ Beans, Waves and Tim Hortons. If you're in a hurry, thez are definitely a good choice. But let's be honest, you don't travel to another city to have a Frappuccino at Starbucks that tastes exactly the same as the one in your hometown.
For that reason, I created this small guide - five coffee stores you shouldn't miss when you're in town. Each of them is something special, a place where you feel welcomed.
1. Kafka
2525 Main Street
This coffee store carries a big name, a pressure that not every coffee shop can handle. But Kafka justifies the name.
The atmosphere in the coffee store itself is super relaxed even though it's a busy place. It's the perfect place to study, having a coffee date, to relax or to enjoy people watching (my favourite thing to do). Most of the time I came to Kafka to study because it was just next to my house, but sometimes I also just sit there, had a cup of coffee and enjoyed the busyness of Main Street.
The last time I went there I got a tea and I was surprised that you can get a refill for your tea, that's unique!

If you're at Mainstreet and Broadway you should definitely check out this place, you're not going to regret it.
2. Breka Bakery
818 Bute Street
855 Davie Street

Breka Bakery is a 24/7 open and for that reason a really popular coffee store for students. But don't get afraid of the fact that there are a lot of students with laptops and study groups. Breka Bakery is worth a visit even if you're not a student.
From my point of view the Breka Bakery has the best pastries in town. The pastries reminded me a little bit of home and so far none of them disappointed me.
When my parents were in town, they lived really close to Breka Bakery on Bute Street. For that reason we decided more than once to have breakfast over there. We didn't regret it and my parents just loved the place. We enjoyed coffee, smoothies, croissants, scones and of course the famous pastries.

So, if you're wandering around in the West End or Davie Street of Vancouver, don't forget to visit Breka to taste one of there pastries!
3. Finch's Tea and Coffee House
353 West Pender Street (Corner Pender/Homer, Downtown)
This place is really convenient when you're in Lower Downtown and you're looking for a nice coffee shop. Downtown is full with Starbucks, Tim Hortons, JJBeans and Waves but it is a real challenge to find a nice coffee store. But I get one for you - Finch's Tea and Coffee House. The décor of this coffee store could be described as Shabby Chic - but I mean it in a really positive way. It's a small café with small tables, some of them are placed in the "shop window". Curtains and flowers give you the feeling of a living room. Besides Tea and Coffee you can have sandwiches, soups, breakfast, small dishes and sweets. Just recently I had a salad here and I have to admit that it was one of the best salads I had in Vancouver.
One fun fact: On my flight back home last December, I watched the movie "If I stay" (great, cheesy movie). I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that the main actress met her friend in Finch's Tea and Coffee House (I even told it my neighbours in the plane).
One block away from Finch's, there is an amazing bookstore called McLeod's Book. It's an old bookstore full with books from all over the world about every single topic you're looking for. And if I say full, I mean full :) What about grabbing a book at McLeod's bookstore and then having a coffee at Finch's?
4. Coco et Olive

I discovered Coco et Olive together with Carla, actually she discovered it when she came to visit me. The coffee shop grabbed our attention right away, it's this cute little shop with a painting at the outer wall and plants in the window. Hipster meets Hippie, a get together in the living room. That's how we felt when we entered Coco et Olive. We tried their breakfast, Carla had lunch there and I used the shop as my study room.
The furniture is really mixed, a lot of pieces don't match but it's gives the place a welcoming feeling. The walls are full with art, the window is decorated with plants and flowers.
If you order a tea, you get a teapot and a cute cup, both decorated with ornaments. The dishes are in the same style and everything reminded me a little bit of the dishes of grandparents. But everything is really charming.
Like most of the coffee stores on Main, Coco et Olive offers quiet healthy food such as soups, sandwiches and quiches. Especially the sandwiches make me come back to Coco et Olive quiet a lot.
Coco et Olive is at the same street as Kafka and Parallel but it's more south than the other two.
5. Forty Parallel Ninth

2198 West 4th Avenue
You are into sweets? Especially donuts? That's your place for you to go. If Homer Simpson would exists, he wouldn't go somewhere else. The Parallel Coffee Shop is famous for their donuts and you can see that on the long line-up in front of the cashier. If you're going to visit Parallel, bring some patience, you probably have to stay a little bit in line. Even during the week, it can happen that you have to stay in line. But let me tell you that it is worth it. Students, couples, families - everybody finds it's way to Parallel. You can't miss a donut here! My favourite donut is the cinnamon one.
The coffee shop is a comfortable place to stay, the wooden interior, the couches and the fireplace give it a rustic but warm atmosphere. If the sun is shining you can even sit outside which is not a common thing here in Vancouver, coffee stores with a small patio are hard to find.
As you can see, three of the five coffee stores I chose are on Main Street and I can't deny that I just love this street. Places like Parallel make it such a great and welcoming area and this part of the city is not always as crowded with tourists.
So, this is just a small selection of coffee stores that I visited frequently. Of course, there are way more coffee stores all over the city and I'm thinking to write a second post about coffee shops in Vancouver. I just feel like I didn't cover all of them.
