Oktoberfest

GERMAN VERSION (English Version below)

"O'zapft is" - das hiess es am letzten Wochenende in München. Der Beginn des Oktoberfest - drei Wochen heisst es nun auf den Münchner Wiesn Bier, Haxen und Schlagersongs. Das grösste Volksfest Europas ist eine Attraktionen für Menschen aus aller Welt.
Nun musste ich mir in Vancouver doch einige Male anhören, was ich doch für ein Langweiler sei und noch nie am Oktoberfest war. Die Entrüstung ist verständlich, da wir ja nun mal nur vier Studen von München entfernt wohnen und das für Kanadier quasi um die Ecke bedeutet.
Diese Schmach liess ich nicht auf mir sitzen und deshalb hiess es letztes Wochenende: Munich, here I come. Auch wenn es dieses Jahr budgetbedingt nur einen Tag ans Oktoberfest ging, muss ich sagen, dass es sich gelohnt hat.



6.30 Uhr morgens ging es los mit dem Bus. Wir hätten den Bus fast verpasst, aber der liebe Busfahrer hatte am Morgen früh dann doch ein Auge zugedrückt trotz fünf Minuten Verspätung. Um 11 Uhr waren wir auch schon in München und wir stürmten gleich in die Innenstadt, da die liebe Jan noch ein Dirndl brauchte. Keine Schwierigkeit in einer Stadt, die sich geradezu im Dirndl-Rausch befindet.
Nach ein paar weiteren Erledigungen ging es dann in Richtung Wiesn.

Was wir am Oktoberfest am Meisten gemacht haben? Nein, nicht getrunken - gegessen und zwar ohne Ende. Vor allem nach einem Jahr Kanada habe ich die deftige deutsche Küche vermisst. Wir haben wirklich geschlemmt! Holzfällersteak, Flammkuchen, Haxen, Schupfnudeln, Schokoladenfrüchte und Apfelschnitten. Als wir es dann doch noch in ein Zelt schafften (nach 13 Uhr waren schon alle Zelte voll), gab es dann doch noch das obligatorische Mass. Und mein Dindl? Ja, das war eigentlich ganz bequem bis ich fünf verschiedene Mahlzeiten gegessen und einen Liter Bier getrunken habe. Da wurde es dann doch ein wenig eng! :-)

Eines der Highlights war auf jeden Fall - richtig touristisch - das Riesenrad. Die Aussicht von da oben ist der Wahnsinn und man wird sich auch einmal des Ausmasses dieses Volksfestes bewusst. Ausserdem hat man auch einen wunderschöne Aussicht auf die Stadt.



Doch ohwee, da war es schon wieder 18 Uhr und wir waren viiiel zu spät dran für den Bus. Also Dirndl hoch und los gerannt! Wir mussten schliesslich noch zum Hauptbahnhof unsere Sachen holen und dann zurück zum Bus. Als wir dann keuchend am Bus ankamen, hat unser Chauffeur nur gelacht: Ihr schon wieder! :-)

Ja, ein Tag ist doch ein wenig kurz, um das Oktoberfest rundum zu geniessen, aber es hat sich durchaus gelohnt. Oktoberfest geht also auch spontan meine Lieben!

ENGLISH VERSION

"O'zapft is" - That's how the mayor opened the Oktoberfest last week in Munich. For three weeks Munich is full with people in traditional cloth and the smell of solid German food is all over the city. The biggest fair Europe's is an attraction for people from all over the world.

While I was in Vancouver everybody was making fun of me because I've never been to the Oktoberfest even though I live that close. What a lame person!! :) Well for me Munich was still four hours away, for Canadian this means it's right around the corner. :)
Back in Europe, I decided that I have to change that circumstance. For that reason I went to the Oktoberfest last weekend. We made that decision really spontaneously, so we could only stay one day, everything else would have been too expensive. But even though we just went one day, it was absolutely worth it.



The departure was at 6.30am, we travelled by bus. We almost missed it but the bus driver was really funny and took it easy that early in the morning (Lucky us). At 11am we already arrived in Munich and we rushed into the city right away to buy a Dirndl for Jan. After that we made our way to the Wiesn to experience the world famous Oktoberfest.

What we did the most at the Oktoberfest? Guess what, it wasn't drinking, it was eating, excessive :) Especially after one year in Canada, I missed the German kitchen. It's pretty solid but once in a while awesome. We really tried everything: Haxen, Steak, Flammkuchen and a lot of dessert.
We didn't make it in one of the big tents for a long time because they were already packet at 1pm. But when we finally made it, we had to drink one of the famous Mass. After all this food and a liter of beer I was about to burst because my dirnl was pretty tight;)

One of our highlight was the ferris wheel. Super touristic - I know - but the view on top of the ferris wheel was unbelievable. We could see the whole dimension of the Oktoberfest and besides that you had a great view all over the city. It was a sunny day, so the view couldn't have been better.



But holy crap, when we checked the time it was already 6pm and we had to be at the bus station at 6.30. So we lifted our skirts and run like there is no tomorrow. We had to get our bags at the main station and then take the train to the bus station. When we finally arrived at the bus station - completely out of breath - the bus driver was laughing "You girls again!".

Yes, the day was really short and we had to pack everything into one day but we really enjoy our time and I loved the experience Oktoberfest. Be spontaneous guys, it's worth it:)
