We the north - ein Besuch in Toronto

Lange ist es her, dass ich hier was gepostet habe. Naja, war auch lange nichts los. :-)
Anfangs dieses Jahres war ich für ein paar Wochen in Toronto und Vancouver. Gemeinsam mit meinem Freund haben wir in Toronto das volle Touristenprogramm durchgezogen. Unsere Perlen möchte ich euch natürlich nicht vorenthalten.

Toronto, das New York Kanadas. Die Grossstadt in mitten von weiter Natur und unendlicher Weite. Die Heimatstadt von Drake, Jim Carrey und Neil Young. Toronto war für mich nie eine Must-Seen Destination und doch hat mich die Stadt am Lake Ontario begeistert.

Übernachtung

Toronto ist, wie jede internationale Stadt, relativ teuer. Da Kanada allgemein ein teures ist, schlägt das dann in Toronto doppelt aufs Budget. Deshalb mein Tipp: Airbnb. Die tollste Erfindung, die es gibt (Ja, ich bin mir den Nachteilen bewusst und der Kritik von Hauseigentümern und Hotelbesitzern). Aber wir sind jung und reise mit einem kleinen Budget, deshalb musste ein Airbnb her.
Wir haben uns also für ein Airbnb entschieden und haben unseren Entscheid keine Minute bereut. Das Apartment war mitten in Downtown, 10 Minuten vom CN-Tower entfernt und in bester Lage für unser geplantes Sighseeing-Programm.

Öffentlicher Verkehr

Toronto hat einen gut ausgebauten öffentlichen Verkehr. Trams, Metro und Busse bringen dich überall hin. Aber Toronto ist auch eine riesige Stadt. Da kann es mit dem öffentlichen Verkehr schon mal etwas dauern. Unsere Entdeckung: Uber. Wir sind quer durch die ganze Stadt gefahren, immer schön mit Uber. Wir haben oft nicht mehr als 10 Dollar bezahlt und mussten nie länger als fünf Minuten auf einen Uber-Fahrer warten. Der Service war wirklich klasse!! Ausserdem hatten wir viele lustige Gespräche mit den Uber-Fahrern.
Wer ein Skeptiker von Uber ist oder sonst seine Vorbehalte hat, kann aber auch ohne Problem die Metro oder die Trams benutzten. Sie fahren regelmässig, bedienen die ganze Stadt und sich nicht gefährlich.

Sightseeing

In Toronto gibt es unglaublich viel zu sehen und zu machen. Eine Woche war für uns perfekt, um die Stadt in aller Ruhe zu erkunden und die sogenannten Must-Seens abzuklappern.
Hier also ein kleiner Auszug, was wir uns in den Tagen in Toronto angeschaut haben.


1. Ripley's Aquarium of Canada
Eigentlich bin ich kein grosser Fan von Aqurien (Was ist denn bitte die Mehrzahl von Aquarium??), aber das in Toronto hat mir wirklich gut gefallen. Man kann durch einen riesigen Tunnel laufen (oder für die ganz bequemen unter uns, sich auf einem Rollband hindurch fahren lassen) und die Fische und Haie schwimmen über die Köpfe hinweg. Ausserdem kann man Rochen anfassen. Da war ich mir allerdings nicht so sicher, wie tierfreundlich das wirklich ist.
Trotzdem hat sich der Besuch gelohnt und man kann wirklich sehr viel Zeit im Aquarium verbringen. Ideal also für schlechtes Wetter oder wenn Toronto mal wieder unter extremer Hitze oder Kälte leidet. Eines von beidem wird euch in Toronto auf jeden Fall treffen, denn in der kanadischen Grossstadt ist es entweder unglaublich warm oder richtig beissend kalt. Etwas dazwischen gibt es nicht. Bei uns war es letzeres.

2. Distillery District
Der Distillery District ist ein Überbleibsel der kanadischen Geschichte. Toronto war im 19. Jahrhundert das Zentrum von Distillerien. Die weltgrösste Whiskey-Fabrik stand 1860 in Toronto - im Distillery District. Die Alkoholproduktion ist in den letzten Jahrzehnten zwar stark zurück gegangen, allerdings hat Toronto immer noch eine Vielzahl von Mikrobrauereien. Diese sind heute über die ganze Stadt verteilt, allerdings gibt es immer noch eine Vielzahl im alten Quartier der Stadt. Ein Besuch des Distillery District lohnt sich auf jeden Fall und war einer meiner persönlichen Highlights. Das Quartier ist sehr klein und durch das Kopfsteinpflaster fühlt man sich in der modernen Stadt Toronto in ein anderen Jahrhundert zurückversetzt. Die Häuser sind klein und voll mit Gallerien, kleinen Läden und - wie gesagt - Brauereien und Restaurants. Ausserdem befindet sich eines der schönsten und besten mexikanischen Restaurants im Distillery District.

3. ROM - Royal Ontario Museum
Als es in Toronto bitterkalt wurde und wir nur noch mit mehreren Schichten aus dem Haus konnten, entschieden wir uns, den Tag im Museum zu verbringen. :) Und es hat sich gelohnt. Wir sind fünf Stunden durch das Museum gewandert, ohne gelangweilt zu sein und vor allem ohne je fertig zu werden. Das Museum ist riesig und extrem vielfältig. Die Geschichte Kanadas, die Kultur der Indianer, die asiatische, europäische, afrikanische und lateinamerikanische Geschichte und eine Sonderausstellung zur traditionellen Kleidung in Mexico. Und ich bin mir sicher, dass ich irgendetwas vergessen habe oder wir einen Teil des Museum überhaupt nicht gesehen haben. :)
Das Museum ist auch architektonisch sehr eindrücklich und schon von aussen betrachtet ein Meisterwerk.


4. CN-Tower
Wir sind dieses Mal nicht auf den CN-Tower, allerdings waren wir auch beide schon mal da. Die Aussicht vom CN-Tower ist wirklich spektakulär und man sagt, dass man an guten Tagen bis zu den Niagara Fällen sehen kann. Überlegt euch einen Besuch auf dem Tower allerdings gut und geht nur, wenn das Wetter auch wirklich schön ist, denn der Spass kostet euch ein mittleres Vermögen. :) Okay, das ist vielleicht ein bisschen übertrieben, aber mit knapp 40 Dollar ist es auf jeden Fall eine teurere Angelegenheit. Trotzdem - die Aussicht ist toll.

5. Toronto Raptors Game
Mein persönliches Highlight dieser Ferien war das Spiel der Toronto Raptors gegen die Chicago Bulls. Eingekleidet in den Farben der Raptors, feuerten wir das einzige kanadische Team in der NBA an. Das Spiel war spannend, der Vorsprung der Raptors hoch, doch in den letzten 10 Sekunden haben sie dann noch verloren.
Die Stimmung war trotzdem grossartig und wir waren ganz begeistert. Ganz touri-mässig kamen wir nicht mehr aus dem Staunen heraus, fotografierten wie die Wilden und amüsierten uns ab den passionierten Raptor-Fans.

Ausflüge

Wir haben natürlich auch einen Tagesausflug gemacht und ihr werdet wohl sofort erraten wohin. :) Genau, zu den Niagara Fällen. Allerdings haben wir eine Wine-Tour gebucht, das heisst, wir fuhren erst zu einer Winery, dann zum Dörfchen Niagara-on-the-lake und dann an die Niagara-Fälle.

Der Besuch der Winery war toll. Wir durften verschiedene Ice-Wine (Spezialität der Region) probieren und haben schliesslich auch einen gekauft. Ice-Wine ist ein unglaublich süsser Dessertwein. Die Trauben werden bei Minustemperaturen abgenommen und sind dadurch gefroren.

Nach der Winery ging es weiter nach Niagara-on-the-lake, einem idyllischen Dörfchen, ein paar Kilometer entfernt von den Niagara-Fällen. Wir fühlten uns wie wir durch die Zeit gereist wären. Das Dorf ist voller kleiner Häuschen in verschiedenen Farben, aus Holz und wunderschön geschmückt. Wir haben sogar eine Kutsche auf der Strasse gesehen. Also falls ihr mal zu den Niagara-Fällen fahrt, besucht das kleine Dörfchen für einen Kaffee und Kuchen.

Zum Schluss fuhren wir zu den Niagara-Fällen und ich war wirklich gespannt, wie sie im Winter aussehen, da ich sie bis jetzt nur im Sommer gesehen habe. Leider war es nicht kalt genug, so dass die Fälle leider nicht eingefroren waren. Es war aber trotzdem wunderschön und dieses Naturspektakel hat mich erneut in seinen Bann gezogen. Wieder einmal wurde mir bewusst, wie sehr mich die Natur und seine Schönheit beeindrucken. Vor allem in Kanada liebe ich es die Natur zu entdecken, am Liebsten zu Fuss.
Diese Tour kann ich euch also nur empfehlen und es passt wirklich alles locker in einen Tag.

Essen

Toronto ist das Paradies für ein Ess-Paar wie wir es sind. :) Da Toronto als eine der multikulturellsten Städte der Welt und dementsprechend kann man sich auch einmal durch die ganze Welt essen. Das haben wir natürlich gemacht. :) Leider hab ich mir die einzelnen Restaurants natürlich nicht notiert, ein Fehler, der mich jetzt sehr ärgert. Aber wir haben oft einfach auf unser Bauchgefühl (hahah) verlassen und waren nie enttäuscht. Einen Tipp habe ich allerdings: die Nutella-Bar. Ja, ihr habt richtig gehört, es gibt in Toronto eine Nutella-Bar!! Traum und Albtraum zu gleich.

Toronto ist wirklich ein Ausflug wert und für all jene, die Kanada bereisen wollen, auf jeden Fall ein guter Startpunkt. Mein Westküsten-Herz muss allerdings eines festhalten: Die Menschen an der Westküste sind viel freundlicher und entspannter als es die Menschen in Toronto sind. Aber vielleicht ist das auch eine gewisse Grossstadt-Arroganz, die man weltweit antrifft.

Ich freue mich wie immer, Meinungen und Input zu hören oder vielleicht noch andere Must-Seens, die ich bei meinem nächsten Besuch unbedingt sehen sollte.

It has been a long time that I posted something here. But from today on I would like to keep this blog alive again. :)

At the beginning of this year, my boyfriend and I went to Toronto for a week. We did the whole tourist program and here I want to share some of our highlights with you..

Toronto, the New York of Canada. The big city in the middle of wide nature, on the east side of a huge country. The hometown of Drake, Jim Carrey and Neil Young. After two visits of the Toronto, I can say that I really like this city at the lake of Ontario.

Accommodation

Like every big city in this world, Toronto is quite expensive. Additionally, Canada is a really expensive country itself as well. So the combination of big city and Canada is asking for a big budget. If you travel on a low budget, like we did, I would recommend Airbnb. We absolutely loved it. Even thought I am aware of the disadvantages and the complaints of the hotel and tourist industry, I still think it's the best you can do when you travel. We had a great apartment in the middle of downtown, close to many attractions, 10 minutes away from the CN-Tower. 

Public Transport

We made the experience that Toronto has quite a good public transport. They have trams, a subway and buses and you can reach most parts of the city by public transport. But there is a tiny problem: Toronto is huge. Sometimes it can take you forever to go from one side to the other. And in our case it was also freezingly cold, so we used our newest discovery: Uber. With Uber we crossed the whole city and we always had quite a lot of fun with the drivers. Most of the time we didn't pay more than 10 dollars, which was a good deal.

But if you're skeptical towards Uber, you can use the public transport without any problem.

Sightseeing

There is so much to see in Toronto and we were really happy that we had a whole week to explore the city. I feel like we have seen a lot, even though there would be always something else to see. Well, we didn't see Drake, so I guess we have to go back. ;)

Here are some of the thing we did:

1. Ripley's Aquarium of Canada

Honestly, normally I'm not a big fan of Aquariums (is this how you write it in Plural??) but the one in Toronto was pretty amazing. You can walk through a big tunnel and above and around you, you can see different kind of fish and even a little shark. For the lazy people (like us), you can even step on a treadmill that brings you through the tunnel. There is also the possibility to touch rays but I'm not really sure how animal-friendly this is.

Additionally you learn a lot about the animals of the sea and the sea itself. I found it an interesting and informative visit.

The Aquarium is the perfect idea on a rainy or cold day because you can spend a lot of time in there. Just make sure to be there on time, there is always a huge line in front of the Aquarium. Or be as smart as we were and go there in the evening when it's almost empty. :)

2. Distillery District

The Distillery District is a relict of Canadian history. In the 19th century, Toronto was the center of distilleries. In 1860 the world's biggest whiskey fabric was in Toronto - right in the Distillery District. The production of alcohol decreased in the last couple of decades but Toronto still has a big amount of microdistilleries. They are spread all over the city, but the Distillery District is the heart of them. A visit of the old district is certainly worth a visit and was one of my personal highlights. The district is pretty small, full with tiny stores, galleries, distilleries and restaurants. You feel a little like back in the days! And besides that, there is one of the prettiest and best Mexican restaurants in the Distillery District.

3. ROM - Royal Ontario Museum

When we visited Toronto it was December/January. So? It was bitter cold!! We had to wear several layers to survive the cold. Meanwhile the people from Toronto were making fun of us because it has been way worse in Toronto before. 

As it was that cold, we decided to go to the museum to spend some warm hours inside. It was absolutely worth it!! We spend about five hours in the museum and we are sure that we still missed some parts of it. The great thing about the ROM is that it is so diverse. We saw exhibitions about the Canadian history, the culture of the first nations, the culture of Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America and even a extra exhibition about traditional cloth in Mexico. What a coincidence!

Besides the great exhibitions the museum itself is worth a visit, it's a super modern building.

4. CN-Tower

We didn't go on top of the CN-Tower but that's because we both have been there and the weather wasn't good enough to go there again. But the view on the CN-Tower is definitely spectacular and on good days - they say - you can even  see the Niagra Falls. 

Nevertheless you should think about a visit of the tower! Only go there when the weather is nice, this attraction is crazy expensive - a little fortune. Okay that's exaggerated but 40 Dollars is still a lot of money. But as I said, the view is really great!!

5. Toronto Raptors Game

I think I can talk for both of us when I say that the Raptors Game was definitely a highlight of our trip. They played against the Chicago Bulls and the atmosphere was amazing! Dressed up in the colors of the Toronto Raptors, we cheered for the only Canadian team in the NBA. The game was intense, the Raptors were ahead and then they lost in the last 10 seconds. 

Nevertheless we had a lot of fun and enjoyed the real Canadian experience!

Day Trips

Being seven days in the city, we got the chance to do a day trip outside the city. And most probably you can guess where we went. :) Exactly, the Niagara Falls. We didn't do a classical tour, we booked a wine tour online. Our first stop was at a winery, after we went to the little town called Niagara-on-the-lake and then to the famous Niagara-Falls. 

The trip to the winery was great. We got an introduction into the world of ice wine, a specialty of the cold eastern part of Canada. We could try different ones and in the end we bought one of them. Ice wine is a really sweet dessert wine. The grapes are picked in winter when the grapes are frozen. 

After the winery we visited the town Niagara-on-the-lake, a small, idyllic town just a few minutes away from the Niagara Falls. We felt like back in the days, the houses were really small as well as the shops, there was even a horse carriage and everything was just really cute. If you ever go to the Niagara-Falls you should check out this town and have a coffee and a cake there.

Nevertheless the highlight were the Niagara-Falls. I was really curious to see them in winter, the last time I was here was in summer. Unfortunately it wasn't cold enough that the falls were frozen. It was still amazing, a natural miracle that fascinated me once again. We both took a million pictures again from every possible perspective. :) The nature of Canada is just something unique!

Looking back, the tour was absolutely worth it and something to recommend.

Food

Toronto is a food paradise, especially for a food couple as we are. :) Toronto is one of the most multicultural city and therefore you have restaurants from all over the world. We tried a lot and we never made a bad experience. Unfortunately I didn't write down the places we went but I can just recommend you to try as much as possible. I just have one little tip: the Nutella-Bar! <3 Yes, Toronto has a Nutella-Bar!!! We went there more then once, to be honest. ;) 

Toronto is really worth a visit and I can just recommend you to check out this city! If you plan to do a trip in Canada, Toronto is a good starting point. But there is one little thing that I have to mention as a West coast girl: People in the West are definitely friendlier and more relaxed than in Toronto. Maybe it's the big city arrogance that you can feel all over the world but we met some really rude people.
